I decided to upgrade the looks of my carvings. My first effort is the Corian-Oak base shown above in before and after. This carving is of "Jasper" from Gerald Sears collection. I don't think he offers it now. While the new base does not produce a spectacular change, it would be much better if I had a better color match for the carving. The color of the Corian piece is all I could locate in this area(scrap from a cabinet shop). I plan to buy several colors of Corian and make new bases for other carvings. I plan to offer these bases, Corian & wood in various sizes. If I had been making a wood bases for sale, there would not be end grain showing. The Corian bases can be circular, square, rectangular, elliptical, or special order shapes. The wood bases can be all of the above as well as hexagon and octagon in shape. In this case, I had to cut the original base off of the carving - very carefully. In the future I will cut the base off before I carve the piece.

Below is a short slide show of several carvings with various Corian bases. The wood is butternut with linseed oil finish. Click on AUTO - it takes about 5 seconds to start.
