Cross and Dove Kit

This unusual kit was designed by Bill Rulon from Shenandoah, IA. Bill was kind enough to allow me to use it on my site. Some of Bill's carvings are shown on the woodcarving page.

The kit for this cross is shown at below. The walnut parts are cut to make a tight fitting lap joint. The staff is 5/8" x 1 1/2" x 12", and the cross piece is 5/8" x 1 1/2" x 7". The lap joint is tight and has no gaps at the intersection. The lighter wood is red oak. The dove blank is band sawn from basswood.

The assembly of the cross should be done first. This will allow you to decide where you wish to place the dove on the cross. The dove is bonded to the oak vertical piece. There is nothing critical about the location. However, you will need to locate the final position of the dove and mark it on the back of the carving blank. Then, don't carve on the bonding area.

The sheet shown below shows the 4 primary views of the dove. This sheet, along with the note on assembly, comes with each kit.
